When:
Thursday, April 26, 2012 @ 9PM
Where:
Graphic Design Grad Crit Room A112-H
What:
A conducted experiment with binaural tones through a performance. Binaural tones are used for meditation in which a tone is played in one ear and another tone is played in your other ear, creating a specific sub-harmonic that adjusts the frequency of your brainwaves that leads you into altered states of consciousness or relaxation. So this is typically done using headphones so you can hear the tones clearer, but the experiment is, creating these binaural tones without using headphones. Instead, using loud amps and guitars, where one side of the room would create one tone and the other side of the room would create another tone. As you walk in this space, you are immersed in dual tones and as you walk closer to each speaker, your brain will (hopefully) recognize the two different harmonics and detect the sub harmonic.
The performance will last 20 minutes. This is because your first sleep cycle lasts about 10 minutes, in which we will create these binaural tones using a guitar and bass creating drones. Then for the next 10 minutes, we will perform more ambient drone tones suggesting that you will transition into a dream state. Ideally, this performance would last 90 minutes, which is the entirety of one sleep cycle, but for times sake, we are shortening this to 20 minutes.
Another goal is to create a soundscape environment in which you are totally immersed in, that is enriched in resonant feedback and drones. Hopefully, this will create a physiological phenomenon that you might not realize on a superficial level, but your brain might. So this experiment will not have a definitive answer one can speak of, but the combination of sounds will create an experience that will hopefully resonate with you APPROXIMATELY FOREVER.
